ELEMENTARY READING WITH THE STARS
Our new reading competition began in September of 2009. Students in grades 4-6 were placed in teams and will compete for ‘Top Reading Team’ weekly by reading the selected books and answering random questions correctly to prove they have read the book. Top Reading teams will be rewarded quarterly. The program will culminate at the Fine Arts Fair in April 2010 with the ‘Top Reading Team of the Year’. (All rewards to be decided later and by the students themselves).

So, this is how you can help your team-–start reading! Below is a link to the list of the 144 book titles. Most of the books have been selected because they have won the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award. (Children and librarians in Illinois in grades 4-8 have selected these books and voted them as their favorites). Print this list and keep it safe--possibly on your refrigerator. Highlight the books you read and write a little note about each one. Thankfully, note that all these and more are in our Aquin Elementary School Library as well as the Freeport Library!

Enjoy . . .

JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH RECOMMENDED READING
What comes to mind when you think about summer? Swimming? Summer camp? Barbecues? Music in the park? This year, why not make sharing books part of your family’s summer fun?

Summer reading and book discussions help your student maintain reading skills, improve reading fluency, and learn new vocabulary and concepts. Most importantly, when parents and children enjoy summer reading together, children develop a love of books and reading that lasts a lifetime.

I am challenging all Junior High students to read throughout the summer. Any student who returns a reading log signed by a parent/guardian will be given a treat the first day of school. Any student who has turned in their reading log will be given the opportunity to earn extra credit. The first week of school I will give an assignment that can be worth extra credit points. I will accept extra credit for up to five books. I do not give extra credit, so this is a once a year opportunity.

Mrs. Gogel has put together a wonderful list of books that are available in the library at Aquin.
Click below to  view the list.  This list is just what is available at school; you are welcome to read any book of your liking.

I hope you have a relaxing summer. Please e-mail me with any questions you may have.

Thank you,
