9th Grade World History:
Text: “World History: Connections to Today, Prentice Hall, 2005
Course Description: This course is designed to give an overview of world history from prehistory on through post WWII. Study will focus on the rise and fall of civilizations in Europe, Asia, South America, North America, Australia and Africa. Students will also become aware of economic, cultural, religious, social, and government trends.
Course Objectives:
· Students will be able to explain how geography and history are related.
· Students will be able to describe how historians try to reconstruct the past.
· Students will be able to explain how the first cities emerged and identify basic features of civilizations.
· Students will be able to describe the ways that cultures can spread and change.
· Students will be able to identify traits of various religions and their influences on cultures throughout periods of history.
· Students will be able to explain how technology sparked changes in agriculture and industry.
· Students will be able to explain how the ancient Egyptians rose to power and endured during the old, middle, and new kingdoms.
· Students will be able to explain how Rome became an ancient super power.
· Students will be able to list and describe the differences between the Athenians and the Spartans.
· Students will be able to describe the significance of the first and second industrial revolution.
· Students will be able to identify the main causes of WWI and how the war was resolved.
· Students will be able to identify the main causes of the Russian Revolution and Russian Civil war.
· Students will be able to identify the main causes of WWII and how the war was resolved.
· Students will be able to analyze the role world organizations played.
Course Expectations: My main expectation of my students is that they try their best. Students are expected to adopt an “I Can” attitude. If students are struggling, I have an open door policy. This means that students are encouraged to come see me. If set up ahead of time, I am happy to set up study partners, give the student extra practice work, and/or work with the student myself after school.
