Physical Education
Grades 7-12

The physical education program will offer something for all type of students.  The course will integrate and utilize ideas from many areas, including sports, physical fitness, movement education, individual, and dual activities.  Each unit will start out with the basics such as the rules, the basic knowledge, and the skills that are needed to understand the activity.  The students will then use this knowledge through playing lead-up activities and the activity itself. 

This course will also stress the importance of the affective domain, which deals with sharing, taking turns, fairness, and concerns for others.  All these qualities add up making a well-rounded individual, which in physical education we call sportsmanship.  Activities include soccer, football, archery, softball, basketball, volleyball, hockey, and miscellaneous games.

  1. Each student will become competent in a wide variety of body management and physical skills.
  2. Each student should acquire personal values that encourage living a full and productive life. (cooperating with others, to do one’s best, and becoming involved)
  3. Each student should acquire desirable social standards and ethical concepts. (participation, cooperation, good citizenship, and fair play)
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of different team sports and activities.
  5. Each student will be able to demonstrate the proper skills learned for each sport and activity.
  6. Each student will become competent about the importance of good health and physical fitness.
  7. Each student should acquire the enjoyment of playing life-long recreation.

The quarter grade will be based upon skill tests, written test over certain units, and daily participation and attitude points, which are worth ten points a day.  Points will be taken off it students don’t do the following:  stretch, participate, follow game rules, have good sportsmanship, or hurt other students (verbal or physical).  If students are out of gym class more than two days, a one-page paper over a topic, which is related to physical education, may be given to the student.  If a student is out for a long period of time, some modifications may be applied.  Another major factor in determining a student’s grade is whether he or she is properly dressed for class.  A student will receive a zero for every time they do not dress properly for gym class up to five times.  After the students fifth time they will be dropped one letter grade for each additional no dress, and that will be the highest grade they can receive regardless how high their scores may be. The quarter grade will be weighted as:  Participation and attitude = 50%, Written tests = 30%, Skill level = 20%.

Expectations for students

  1. Each student is expected to dress for gym class.
  2. Each student is expected to follow all class and school rules.
  3. Each student is expected to participate to the best of their ability in all daily activities.
  4. Each student is expected to treat the teacher and other students with respect.
  5. Each student is expected to turn in assignment on time and take all written and skill tests on the schedule day unless there is a legitimate reason.
