WELCOME
Junior Class: Teresa Zimmerman and Sang Hoon (Peter) Kim

HOMECOMING HIGHLIGHTS
Mass: celebrated by Fr. Mike and Fr. Ariel at St. Joseph Church. Service: craft projects at the elementary school, interacting with the children at Amity daycare, YMCA Chidren’s Center, Jones Farrar Early Learning Center, preparing and serving lunch at Salvation Army soup kitchen, visiting residents at Provena, care packages for the troops. Fun: parade (Jayden and Bayley Pierce were parade marshals), floats, class banners, ice cream social, decorated halls, cars, lockers, cafeteria, “clash day”, volleyball, golf, junior high bowling, pep rally and games, football, dance, class reunions, returning alumni – a fun week!
ITEMS OF NOTE
-Flag Etiquette program was presented to the junior high students.
-Michelle Gogel, Erin Brannick, Eric Harweger, and Brandon Miller accompanied Mrs. Runte to the Diocesan Centennial Mass on September 23rd.
-Seniors attended a retreat at Bishop Lane Retreat Center on September 28-29 led by Fr. Burt Absalon.
-Students attending HCC classes: seven seniors are enrolled in Rhetoric & Composition, and two are taking Intermediate College Spanish. Two seniors are taking College Poetry at Aquin – a total of 64 college credits will be earned during the regular Aquin school day! In addition, students will receive partial tuition reimbursement from the state.
-A peer-mentoring program has begun. Younger students met their “Big Brother/Big Sister” at an ice cream party on September 16.
-The name “PAWS” (Pro-life Advocates Willing to Stand) has been selected by the members of the new pro-life group. Fr. Mike Bolger will celebrate a Pro-Life Mass for the student body on October 7th.
-Options for after school (students must leave campus by 3:15 p.m. unless participating in an official extra-curricular activity that is supervised by an adult)
-10th Period in Room D (for help with academics - Monday through Thursday;
staffed by Mrs. Borgmann, Mr. Pospischil, and student tutors).
-Library – quiet study. DAWG Pound – for high school students.
CONGRATULATIONS
-Homecoming King and Queen: Ben Heiler and Corinne Feiner.
-Homecoming Court: Lauren Avampato, Michelle Gogel, Nicole Plum, Erin Thill, Chad Bald, Cody Gallagher, Aaron Schmelzle, and Ben Welser.
-Nolan Brannick, Andrei Collins, Hayden Deutsch, Elayna Erdmier, Maddy Osadjan, and Jonathon Thomalla attended a Red Ribbon Leadership Conference on September 29.
-Brooke Bausman, Erin Brannick, Tom Bruehler, Aubrey Chang, Kelsey Curry, Zach Martin, Beth Ann Pospischil, Erin Thill, Ashley Townsend, Ben Welser, and Brooke Welser attended a Leadership Conference in Rockford on October 1.
-Senior Night: Football & Golf-Oct. 3 and VB–Oct. 16.

-Rockford Diocesan United in Faith Fund recently distributed $15,312.69 to Aquin Catholic Schools for general expenses and tuition assistance.
-Aquin students are encouraged to sign up to help with the annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive on Friday, October 10 (no school that day).
-Teacher Institute Day is October 10 (CPR training). No School!
-Flu Shots: personnel from the Steph. Co. Health Dept. will be at Aquin on October 9th to administer flu shots ($25). Parents who would like their child(ren) to receive a flu shot must notify the school by October 7th, and send written permission and $25.
-Miss Illinois will present a program to junior high students on character, work ethic, etc. on October 16.
Kudos to Laura Diemer and all who helped and participated in the “Walking of the Dawgs” and the Colby Smith Memorial 4 Mile Classic!!!!!!

Student Handbook Summary 2008–2009
School Day: 7:25 a.m. – 2:22 p.m.
Absence: Parent must phone the office by 8:00 a.m. (each day) for an absence to be marked “excused.” · The school determines if an absence is “excused” or “unexcused” (student does not receive credit for academic work with an unexcused absence).
· Tardies: Definition: not present at school/in class by designated time. Consequence: detention(s).
· Appointments: Present parent’s written permission by 8:00 a.m.; student receives an Exit Slip that must be signed by place of appointment and returned to the Student Office.
· College visit: Present parent’s written request two days in advance of the visit; return college verification to the Student Office (limit of 3 during 11th/12th grades).
· Request for assignments: use Teacher Ease; after four days may request through Student Office. · More than five absences in a school quarter may be considered unexcused.
After School: Students must leave school by 3:15 p.m. unless they are attending a supervised activity.
Cell Phones:must be kept in lockers or cars during the school day EXCEPT at lunchtime in the cafeteria for TEXT only. Consequence: confiscation and fine.
Detentions: (may involve work assignment)
· School week detentions are 45 and 60 minutes ((usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays). · Saturday detentions (7:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.), assigned in increments of 60 minutes per infraction.
· Student must be in regular dress code, report on time, and use the time to work in service for the school.
Dress Code: Following the dress code as written demonstrates maturity and integrity. Suggestion: keep extra belt, tie, etc. in locker; Students will not be allowed to return home to change clothes.
· Dress code is required from the time students enter the building until they leave the building.
· Males may not wear hats inside school during the regular school day and/or when attending an event where hats are inappropriate.
· Boys’ hair: above collar and ear.
Driving Privilege:
· Parking lot use is a privilege; students are expected to drive carefully and respectfully.
Electronics: No music devices during the school day; no games on calculators.
Food: May be eaten in cafeteria ONLY; may NOT have commercial food brought to school for lunch.
· Students may have commercial water bottles (kept capped); appropriate disposal is required (recycling).
· High School Snack Time: healthy food choice during first 5 minutes of 4th Period ONLY.
Halls: Students are expected to be quiet and orderly during passing time.
Planners: Students must have planners in their possession at all times during the school day.
Gum: No chomping/obvious chewing; MAY NOT HAVE GUM DURING MASS; proper disposal.
